Finding Meaning in Suffering: A Faith-Based Perspective | GLM Cancer Support

Understanding the Deeper Meaning Behind Our Suffering

Suffering is one of life’s inevitable experiences. Whether it’s through illness, emotional pain, or loss – every individual, at some point, faces hardship. At Green Lane Masjid’s Cancer Support Service, we understand that one of the most profound questions people ask during these trials is:

“What is the deeper meaning behind my suffering?”

From an Islamic perspective, suffering is never without purpose. In fact, pain and adversity can be deeply transformative for our souls and our connection with Allah عَزَّ وَجَلَّ

Trials Are a Path to Gratitude and Growth

Adversity teaches us gratitude. When a person experiences illness, they begin to truly appreciate the blessing of health. When time becomes scarce, they value their free moments more deeply. When wealth becomes tight, the value of provision becomes clear.

As believers, this reflection is essential. Suffering helps us notice the ease we once had, and it instils a renewed sense of shukr (gratitude) in our hearts. Life is a balance of joy and sorrow, and hardship helps us recognise and value the easier moments.

The Islamic Wisdom Behind Pain

In Islam, suffering is a way for Allah SWT to purify us.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “How wonderful is the case of a believer; there is good for him in everything and this applies only to a believer” [Muslim].

Suffering, especially long-term illnesses like cancer, is a means through which sins are forgiven, hearts are softened, and a stronger reliance on Allah عَزَّ وَجَلَّ is developed.

Cleansing of Sins and a Closer Path to Jannah

Every pain and struggle endured is not wasted. Allah عَزَّ وَجَلَّ uses these moments to purify the believer—wiping away sins and preparing them for a better reward in the Hereafter.

Even something as small as a prick from a thorn, the Prophet ﷺ said, does not go unnoticed by Allah. So imagine the reward and purification that come with enduring something as major as cancer with patience and faith.

Strength Through Faith

Pain can deepen our connection with Allah عَزَّ وَجَلَّ, guiding us to rely on Him more and trust His wisdom. It is during these moments of vulnerability that we often turn to Allah عَزَّ وَجَلَّ more sincerely. Pain becomes a catalyst for taqwa and a reminder of our purpose beyond this world.
