Finding Comfort in the Teachings of Islam
At Green Lane Masjid’s Cancer Support Service, we understand how overwhelming illness and pain can be. But through the Qur’an and Sunnah, we are reminded that our suffering is never in vain. Islam gives us both comfort and clarity during life’s toughest trials.
Your Pain Is Not Wasted
The Prophet ﷺ gave us a beautiful hadith that brings great hope:
“No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, but that Allah expiates some of his sins for that.” (Bukhari)
Every ache, every moment of pain – even something as small as a thorn prick – is a means of purification. Allah ﷻ uses these moments to wipe away sins, elevate your status, and draw you closer to Him. SubhanAllah
Sabr Leads to Jannah
One of the most moving examples from the Sunnah is that of a woman from the companions who regularly lost consciousness. She asked the Prophet ﷺ to make du’a for her healing. He gave her two choices:
- I can make du’a and Allah may heal you
- Or if you are patient, you will be rewarded with Jannah This shows that for those who bear illness with sabr (patience), the reward can be nothing less than eternal peace in Jannah.
Illness Can Be a Blessing in Disguise
It’s easy to feel broken during times of sickness—but in the eyes of Allah ﷻ this might be your greatest moment of strength and reward. With every hardship you endure, you are gaining something more valuable: closeness to your Creator, forgiveness, and eternal reward
